I just got back from today’s Inaugural ARIA Innovator Conference. Kudos to the ARIA team for delivering a super concise and genuinely inspiring day. The program featured some incredible sessions, including:<ul><li><a target="_blank" class="ember-view" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/panospanay/">Panos A. Panay</a>, President of The Recording Academy – Keynote: Music People Are Natural Entrepreneurs</li><li>Gabi Lopez, Senior VP of Global Insights at Universal Music Group – New Ways of Marketing</li><li><a target="_blank" class="ember-view" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-nici-sweaney/">Dr Nici Sweaney</a>, Data Scientist, AI Expert &amp; Founder of AIHerWay – AI The Right Way</li><li><a target="_blank" class="ember-view" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/marctothec/">Dr. Marcus Collins</a>, Bestselling Author, Marketing Professor, Award-Winning Marketer – Culture and Digital Strategy (panel discussion with Zara Seidler)</li><li><a target="_blank" class="ember-view" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/solai-valliappan/">Solai Valliappan</a> (Tech Advisor and Investor) &amp; Ricky &amp; Natalie Kradolfer (Amplify Music) – Creative Entrepreneurship: How to Make it Play</li></ul>Instead of a full rundown, I thought I’d share a few moments that resonated with me — the ideas that challenged my thinking, made me feel completely seen or left me inspired and thirsty for more (not to mention ready to build my AI empire… for good, not evil).1. “Sometimes it helps not to have any options.” — Panos A. Panay Panay shared how not having a clear path actually pushed him to carve out his own. This one really landed for me. I've been musing lately about how the lack of budget in my previous jobs or artistic career made me really steer projects in a way that was community-, network-, and creativity-driven — limitations can fuel creativity, not kill it.2. Being an artist is easier today. Developing a sustainable career is harder. Panos also noted that today's digital landscape makes creating and sharing work simpler than ever — but building a sustainable, lasting career more challenging than ever before. The accessibility is exciting but longevity is tricky. A big driver for me in one of my projects is finding ways for our entire community to achieve longevity.3. Creatives = Entrepreneurs (Even If the Industry Doesn’t Say So) Panos acknowledged how entrepreneurship is traditionally taught, especially in places like world renowned Berkeley College of Music. The suit-and-tie entrepreneur however, just doesn't fit the mold in the creative industry. Artists and creatives are natural entrepreneurs. Massive validation here: I mean, sometimes you just need to be seen.4. NO SHORTCUTS, NO ELEVATORS — THERE ARE ONLY STAIRS. — Dr. Marcus Collins Dr. Collins dropped this truth bomb — simple, real, self-explanatory. I’ve literally said it 3 times to my wife since I got home. Everyone is looking for a shortcut. How many times have I heard this one? Is it AI? Is there a formula? Surely, you've got a way in. You know someone. Can't Marcia or someone like that help you? Short answer: NO. In a creative career, it’s about taking the steps — not skipping them. (I’ve got my good shoes on, though.)5. Partner with people who already believe Another key takeaway from Dr. Collins: partner with people who already believe in what you’re doing. I can’t stress this one enough. Happy to be challenged, happy to be told I’m wrong. But if we’re building together, we gotta believe. Lynley (my former 301/ARI copilot) and Helen (my current project journey woman) said to me today, “You’re one of the very few people I think can pitch anything at short notice.” I’m not sure about that one, but my personal mission with anyone I'm working with is to make them a believer. If not, it can’t work. I don't know how people work any other way, to be honest.6. Culture &amp; Strategy – That Felt Personal One of my favourite sessions was on digital and cultural strategy — not just for the content, but because so much of it resonated with what I already felt deep down. I had a chat with Janna Beth from Offbeat Collective during the break, saying something along the lines of, “sometimes, the biggest inspiration is hearing someone successful articulate the instincts you’ve had all along.” It’s that feeling of, “Yes — I’ve been on the right path.” Maybe we’re both on the right path?7. Back to Basics with Gabi Lopez Lopez reminded us not to overcomplicate things. In an age of data obsession, go direct-to-consumer. Focus on building real relationships with die-hard fans who will advocate for your brand or music. Go to three people and get them to evangelise for you. Similar to #5: It must be the community stuff resonating with me the most.8. More GOOD Content, Not Just More Content Another standout from Lopez: the market doesn’t need more stuff — it just needs better. Don’t just keep producing to stay visible — create things worth remembering. Cut the shit, basically. Pressure’s on to write better blogs then, it seems.9. Authenticity Wins Every Time It wasn’t just Gabi Lopez who emphasised that the most authentic version of yourself or your brand is what truly cuts through — it was a common theme throughout. People can feel when something’s real — they’re here for it.10. Be Very Deliberate About Choosing Investors Solai, Ricky and Natalie shared something powerful: the right investors can outlast even your co-founders. I believe they said outlast most average marriages, and then they said, co-founders. Yikes.Be intentional. It’s not just about money — it’s about alignment. Seems simple. A little close to home with some of my inner circle. Need to repeat this over and over again as we bootstrap our way through the beginning of our journey.Bonus: “You with AI just became the CEO of an unlimited company.” — Dr Nici Sweaney Okay, I said my AI piece at the start. Dr Sweaney’s talk on AI was eye-opening — as eye-opening as a punch in the face. Yes, there are risks — she noted AI could impact up to 25% of industry revenue by 2028 — but also huge opportunity. With the right approach, AI can become a partner in creativity, not a threat to it. So, looks like I have a new hobby every night… until they finally take over.Final Thoughts This day left me thirsty. The themes of authenticity, resilience, and intentionality came through again and again. There really are no shortcuts — just stairs (there I go again) — but if we’re climbing with purpose and surrounding ourselves with people who get it, we’re going to get there.
