DJ Nino Brown didn't just build Australia's biggest urban DJ career - he built it on his own terms, negotiating his own deals, founding his own label, and earning his place on stages with the biggest names in the world. Two decades later, he's still raising the bar.
Over a career spanning more than twenty years, the Sydney-based turntablist, producer, radio host, and now global industry executive has set the standard for urban DJing in this country, and done it through a combination of raw craft, strategic business thinking, and an unrelenting commitment to underpromising and over-delivering. His philosophy is simple and practised: build relationships, differentiate your value, and think long-term. It is a principle that has carried him from the clubs of Sydney to the world's biggest stages and into the global executive suite.
In 2002, Nino made history as the only DJ in Australia to be signed to a major label as a recording artist, launching the Blazin' Mixtape Series with Universal Music Australia. Co-created primarily with DJ Samrai, the series became the nation's biggest urban music compilation, selling over 500,000 copies and establishing Brown as the defining curator of Australian urban music. Crucially, he negotiated higher royalties and a lower advance on that deal - a masterclass in knowing your worth that he still cites as one of the most important business decisions of his career.
Under his production alias Bodega Bullies, Brown produced back-to-back ARIA #1 singles for Justice Crew and Timomatic, two of the most significant chart moments in Australian urban music history. He then founded Digital Dope Music, his own independent label, releasing original records with Dr. Dre protégé King Mez, IAMSU, Flipp Dinero, and a roster of leading Australian artists including B Wise, Big Skeez, and Eco $ystem. His debut studio album TrailBlazin' (2022) produced as an ode to the night out and Australian hip-hop's growth, secured placement on Apple Music's New Music Daily and Beats 1, and across Spotify's New Music Friday, Urban Flavour, and The Drip playlists on release.
On stage, Brown has shared the room with Eminem, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, Busta Rhymes, T-Pain, Fat Joe, Sean Paul, and Akon, performing across Australia, South East Asia, and beyond. He toured with Eminem in 2019 and the Hilltop Hoods shortly after, drawing audiences spanning three generations. Off stage, he has built brand partnerships with Nike, G-Shock, Xbox, and Alizé, and became the first Australian DJ to release a limited-edition branded cap with New Era - a milestone that speaks to his ability to bridge artist culture and commercial opportunity.
Most recently, Nino has stepped into a global role at inMusic as Artist Relations representative for RANE Commercial, Denon DJ, Engine, Stanton, and Numark - the hardware brands that underpin DJ culture worldwide. It is the natural extension of a career built on being both deeply embedded in the culture and fluent in the business around it. Beyond the booth, he has worked as a lecturer, community advocate, and mentor for DJ culture, consistently platforming Australian talent and sharing hard-won industry knowledge with the next generation.
